WHAT IS THEIR PHILOSOPHY OF LIfE
"only men can play music instruments"
Wotose tribe inhabits the Eastern Highlands of Papua New Guinea. Everything they know about the world surround them is based on ancient believes and legends. The tribes is very superstitious and even today all people obey strict rules. Men dominate their society and make all important decisions. Furthermore, tribesmen are divided in several social groups where moving up the ladder is possible only thru marrages.
WHY ONLY MEN PLAY MUSIC INSTRUMENTS?
In the past there used to live two sisters who were very talented in playing music. Both of them were living together deep in the forest. To protect themselves from any intruder the girls decided to live in the crown of a big tonke tree.
One day a passing man had noticed their music play. He was fascinated and wanted to
obtain their skill believing that this will give him a magic power. While searching for the source of the music, he came across the two sisters.
The warrior was hiding in the bush and wanted to surprise the girls. On the following day the youngest sister went for a walk around the forest and decided to descent using a ladder.
As soon as she was down of the tree. The young man faced the older sister seating next to a bow harp and jew’s harp. He requested from her to give him the magic tools. Because she didn’t want to share them, the young warrior killed her. Then he ran away with his treasure. As soon as the young sister return, she was shocked to discover her sister murdered.
Because of that tragedy, all girls from Wotose land do not play any music instruments even today. They only sing and dance while only men are allowed to play bow harp or jew’s harp.
