In the highlands of the central part of Papua New Guinea there is a big piece of land covered by forest and shrubs, inhabited by several hostile tribes who are in a state of armistice. Even so, any small argument between the clans can outbreak a war with ease. Atrigu people are considered among the friendliest in that region.

ATRIGU TRIBE CONTROLLED TERRITORY IN PAPUA NEW GUINEA

Atrigu neighbors the territory of Arango people in the Eastern Highlands of Papua New Guinea. They have met few Lutheran missionaries from Germany several decades ago and this let them learn how to communicate effortlessly with the outside world and be more open minded.

YEPIMAGO IS ATRIGU WARRIOR IN PAPUA NEW GUINEA'S HIGH LAND

Yepimago is one of the elders in Atrigu. His face is covered by red color made of a secretive clay. It is used mainly by warriors and represents a human life. Symbolism is widespread across the valley and many objects carried obvious or hidden meaning. As inspiration the tribe used the surrounding nature as well as all phenomena observed thru their existence.

ATRIGU TRIBE READY TO DANCE IN PAPUA NEW GUINEA

Kundu is a traditional music instrument common for the tribes across Papua New Guinea. It is a kind of membranophone (drum) that produces sound by the vibration of a stretched skin. Usually Atrigu people used the skin of a lizards or snakes for the making of Kundu. For the Atrigu the sound of the Kundu as with everything else, has important meaning. It represented the sound of the ancestors.

Many superstitious beliefs and practices are connected with decoration. In this case, Wiri uses yellow color to demonstrate a blessing by God and body full of super power. This is supposed to build admiration in his fellow clan members as well as to frighten enemies. However, the stronger, respected and more skillful a worrier, the precious is his head as a trophy. In battle opposite tribe’s leaders are often beheaded and later eaten. Their sons are frequently also killed. By doing this the winning tribe is giving signal to any future rivals that a particular tribe is conquered and similar destiny can follow any other opponents. Cannibalism is used not as a food supply, but rather as a form of transferring power.

The necklace is made of a big shell called "kina". Is the same shell locals used instead of money, especially at a time when they have to make a big purchase such as land, pig or a new wife. A hole is drilled in the middle of the shell after soaking it in water for a few days in order to soften it. The white color of the shell symbolizes the bones and strength of this warrior. When deciding to get married family members offer pigs along with “kina”. In exchange the bride will have to look after the groom’s relatives and give birth of 6 to 10 kids.
