WHAT IS THEIR PHILOSOPHY OF LIfE
"MAN AND WITCHCRAFT ARE THE SOURCES OF TROUBLE."
Arango are best known as peaceful tribe influenced strongly by the sorcery. Consequently there were frequent wars with neighbor clans and tribes in the past. Ever since Arango recognized men aggression as reason for their suffering they shift their social organization towards matriarchy where women take important decisions.
WHERE ARANGO LIVE
Occupying few rugged mountains and two valleys in the Eastern Highlands of Papua New Guinea Arango tribe is just few stone’s throw away from the Bismark Sea.
People from the high land
Arango live surrounded by jungle and dense vegetation due to the frequent rainfalls (wet season up to 300+mm and about 100mm during the dry season). Arango learned how to cultivate sweet potatoes (koukou) and use them as stable food. In the same time, they vary their diet with pork or any kind of wild game meat the forest has to offer as well as various plants. In the past the tribe used to practice cannibalism. This was more as a ritual than necessity. It is believed that the chief of the winning tribe can acquire the power of the conquered enemy leader at time of war. All this was done in order to obtain their spiritual power. Nevertheless, this practice is supposed to be discontinued about 20 years ago...but you never know when desperate time will require desperate measures.
Today Arango are considered the friendliest people in the Eastern Highlands due to the less frequent tribal fights compared to other regions and clans. However, the reason for war is accounted mostly to witchcraft. For the past 10 years there is secretive agreement between all women from neighboring clans. They kill most of the new born male babies to prevent any future war that is usually initiated by men.
