Luxembourg Night Marathon

Meeting an old friend

For the first time in my life, i have decided to visit a place without knowing anything about it. I didn't even know what is the official language of Luxembourg. Usually i read lots of guides, comments in blogs and discuss with local friends what to do, where to go. This time i wanted to be different. My idea was to discover the city while running night marathon.

Luxexpo

Luxexpo

After short flight SOF-MUC-LUX i ended up in the heart of Europe. The pre-downloaded map in my Galaxy S3 was the only connection with the really and how to find Luxexpo. From there i had to pick up my race number.

In the late afternoon I met an old friend who happened to be in Luxembourg in the same time. Quick dinner and i am going early to sleep. That night i must say, that i feel a bit nervous. It's my first official marathon.

The Day of Truth Has Come

It's Saturday morning and the weather forecast is for heavy rain. Really hope that the marathon won't be cancelled. On the way to the Luxexpo, where "Luxembourg Night Marathon" should start, the sky opens. It rains like "cats and dogs". In the same time, the entire city has been changed. Everything is ready for a big celebration.

Regardless of the bad weather, 20000+ people start warming up near the start line. It's amazing. Music comes from everywhere. People are smiling. And the rain stops.

ING is the main sponsor of this event, which explains why orange is the predominant color of all branding.

I am in the located in the last group "F". After the final signal is given, it takes 10min till our group can cross the start line.

At the beginning my pace is good. Very good! I am keeping 4:57min/km for 21km. This puts me in top 100 of the racers in my age. I am running thru parks, streets, near historical buildings.  Every 500m~1000m there are local bands playing on drums in order to stimulate all runners.

amazing mood!

...and baam! my left food start hurting like hell. I thought i have broken something, but no. I was able to keep moving...on the expense of huge pain. I have 21km in front of me to run. And the pain was enormous. I was about to quit, but thousands of spectators start shouting "keep moving", "don't give up". Hard to explain with words! Regardless of all the pain, suffering, i kept moving. My pace decreased significantly, but i kept moving.

RUN when you can
WALK if you must
CRAWL if it's needed
BUT never give up!

Besides all the difficulties, pain, long training pays off. I have made it! I am member of the 0.1% club of the people who ran full marathon.
