ARANGO

WHAT IS THEIR PHILOSOPHY OF LIfE

"MAN AND WITCHCRAFT ARE THE SOURCES OF TROUBLE."

Arango are best known as peaceful tribe that is strongly influenced by the sorcery which oftentimes brought war in the past. Ever since the tribe recognized men aggression as reason for their suffering they shift their social organization towards matriarchy where women take most important decisions.

WHERE ARANGO LIVE

Occupying few rugged mountains and two valleys in the Eastern Highlands of Papua New Guinea Arango tribe is just few stone’s throw away from the Bismark Sea.

People from the high land

ARANGO WARRIOR

Having only two annual seasons: wet with heavy rain falls (300+mm rainfall) and dry (up to 100mmd of rainfall), Arango live surrounded by jungle and dense vegetation. In this region the main source of food comes from the sweet potato, few herbs, pigs or any kind of wild game. In the past the tribe used to be a cannibal by eating their enemies at time of war in order to obtain their spiritual power. However, this practice has discontinue about 20 years ago...but you never know when desperate time will require desperate measures.

Today Arango are considered the friendliest people in the Eastern Highlands having fewer tribal fights compared to other regions and clans. However, the reason for war is accounted mostly to witchcraft. For the past 10 years there is secret agreement between all women from neighboring clans to kill all born male babies to prevent any future war that is usually initiated by men.

Defining causal relationship btw different variables contributing to a certain outcome is something doctors and corporate strategists apply before proposing a “treatment”. Whether the action steps Arango decided to follow were the best or not we can debate a lot. However, it is remarkable that this tribe living in a fragile world was able to realize the need for a change. Their willingness to scarify the most valuable (kids) but to drive this change is astonishing. It made me think about how many people I came across in all corners of the world that live a life in a form of inertia, without even trying to change anything.

And before we start judging others, it might be better to look at our modern world history. Most of the found Neanderthals have died by violence, according to a study by Yale University anthropologists. Same scientists shared also their discovery of strong correlation between the size of a group and the frequency of war occurrence. The bigger the group the less often they engage in conflicts. This is what led to formation of alliances across the globe. So, it might look as history repeats itself.

Sometimes is better to do something instead of falling in the trap of inertia. And who knows…Arango might learn from their experience and find better ways to oppose all those tribal wars.
